This is a short piece I wrote a while back. My dearest [livejournal.com profile] doctorsdiva is still not yet out of hospital so this fic is unbeta'd. Any mistakes are my own. Given the heartbreak that is coming I desperately needed to revisit this piece and post it.

He stands by the console, openly watching her, contemplating breaking the last of his rules that inhibit him. She is fresh, young and fleeting yet she is the key to his very existence; this tiny human with her one beating heart.

Why does he hold himself back? Surely after all he has done for the Universe, he is entitled to grab with both hands his chance of happiness? Surely loving another person, even for a short while; creating perfect memories together, is worth the heartbreak that must finally eventuate?

She smiles at him, that perfect megawatt smile, as only she can and his decision is made. He has lived too long not to realise that time continues to march on and even a Time Lord can run out of precious hours, minutes and seconds.

She looks at him oddly as he quickly crosses the room to stand before her. His hands capture her face and her stunned gasp of surprise is lost under the onslaught of his lips on hers. Wonder fills his heart at this close, intimate contact and he kicks himself for not having the courage to do this earlier. So many wasted chances; well no more he vows inside his head. He will still fight the good fight, save the universe and be a Lord of Time but suddenly the future is brighter because he will no longer be alone. Together they will face what may come, and battle for their forever; hand in hand, hearts entwined.
