I have a question for those reading the latest chapter of Envy's Slave

Link to chapter if you need it

Hi all,  Okay well I initially liked chapter eight that I posted yesterday but after a couple of comments on lj and another site I realise I may have confused people about the price nine must pay to get Rose back.

In the chapter he must give up one of his future lives and it will be stored in a special box that comes from Gallifrey.  When I was writing this I was envisioning that nine would stay the same.

From comments I've had it seems that people think nine will regenerate into ten which is not the case but perhaps my writing suggests otherwise

Perhaps I need to make it clearer in the chapter.  Was thinking along the lines of the device forcing him to expel regeneration energy which instead of changing him is collected by the box.  I guess kind of like ten sending the energy to the hand in the jar in Journeys End except that nine has no control over it, just has to let it happen.

Suggestions are most welcome as I'd like to get this right.

I actually totally followed this. I wondered if he was going to change into Ten, but then I read:

“Just listen, okay! Regeneration can be a bit of a dodgy process but that’s not what’s going to happen here. This piece of technology is going to strip away one of my remaining lives and store it." He paused for a moment to beckon Darcia closer before speaking again in a much lower tone. “Once you lift the illusion, I’ll still look like I did this morning.”

So...while I'm not certain how the device works, I totally got that it was meant to "drain" a potential regeneration from him, not force him to actually regenerate...and as I understood it, Nine is staying Nine. :)

Thank you so much for replying and the reassurance. People were saying how worried they were about him regenerating and I'm thinking whoah hang on but he's not. But being stripped of a life so harshly like that is definitely going to have side effects.

Not to worry lol he'll get it back but not how everyone will probably be thinking!

Thanks again, cheers Marg.

I agree with housemaid79, it was clear from that comment to Darcia as far as I was concerned. Without going into technical details (which let's face it are impossible in Who!)it's hard to make it clearer. Is it possible to edit to say he has to give up a future life and avoid the word regenerate?

Not sure what to say hun, I got it and can't understand why nobody else would.

I guess the regeneration came up because Darcia overheard it all and wouldn't let go of the subject. I probably wouldn't change that but I'll have a look at it and see what I can come up with. Probably a more obivous mention by Henry might be the key.

I'm glad you got it though. Its just I had a couple of other comments and an email from someone along the lines of oh this regeneration is worrying and its too complicated and I just freaked thinking Argh what have I done. lol.

I'm sorry. I think my comment was probably not clear enough. I understood what Van Statten wants to do to Nine, I think you made that clear. I'm just curious what will happen next and who's behind it (especially the latter is the confusing part, actually ;))...

Hi thanks for replying. Okay well I will definitely be answering your question in the next chapter about who's the author of all this mess. Hopefully if all goes well this week I'll finish the chapter.

Thank you for letting me know that you understood what I meant. I tend to worry a bit sometimes.

Don't we all worry about our fics sometimes? You've been dropping hints, so of course you got me thinking ;)

Oh, you might want to have a look at my LJ - I posted a sequel to Phone Calls and Cricket Outfits. I hope this manages to cheer you up a bit.

Oh great a sequel. I'll go have a look shortly. Thanks for the heads up. Cheers Marg.

I understood what you meant. Also I remember in, I think it was "Age of Steel" that the Doctor blew on the crystal from the TARDIS to recharge it and said that it had cost him 10 years of his life but thought it was worth it. I figured it would be sort of like that.

Oh yes of course I remember that bit. Not quite certain how it will go just yet but very glad that the chapter came across okay.

Like most authors my writing is important to me so I worry a bit if I think that something is wrong or I haven't perhaps expressed myself properly. Thank you for your reassurances. I'm hoping to work on and finish the next chapter in the next few days. Cheers Marg.
